Pawna Lake is an artificial reservoir located in the Maval taluka of Pune district, Maharashtra. It sits in the Sahyadri hills of the Western Ghats, about 20 km from Lonavala, 55 to 65 km from Pune, and 110 to 120 km from Mumbai. The lake was formed after the construction of the Pawna Dam (also spelled Pavana Dam) across the Pawna River, completed in 1972.

But here is the thing. When most people say “Pawna Lake,” they are not really talking about the reservoir. They are talking about the experience. Spending a night in a tent beside the water. Today, there are over 70 campsites operating around the lake, and Pawna Lake has become the most popular overnight camping destination in Maharashtra.

We are Akshay and Akshada, the founders of pawnalakecamps.in. We started our first campsite here in 2016 when there were barely five or six operators around the lake. Over the past nine years, we have hosted thousands of guests and watched Pawna Lake grow from a hidden spot to a household name.

1. About Pawna Lake

Pawna Lake (also written as Pawana Lake or Pavana Lake) is an artificial reservoir created by the Pawna Dam on the Pawna River. The dam was built by the Maharashtra Irrigation Department between 1963 and 1972, primarily to supply drinking water to the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial region and to generate hydroelectric power through the Pawna Hydroelectric Project, which has a capacity of around 1,250 MW.

The lake is operated by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). It has a catchment area of 113.39 square kilometres and a total storage capacity of approximately 10 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet).

Before the dam was built, this area was a river valley with farming communities spread across roughly 2,500 acres of agricultural land. When the dam was completed and the backwaters filled in, 20 to 25 villages were partially or fully submerged. The reservoir that formed came to be known as Pawna Lake.

The lake is surrounded by the Sahyadri hills, which are part of the Western Ghats. These hills are home to several Maratha-era forts including Tikona, Tung, Lohagad, and Visapur. The combination of calm water, green hills, and historic forts is what makes Pawna Lake so visually striking.

4. History of Pawna Dam

The story of Pawna Lake starts with the Pawna Dam. In the early 1960s, the Maharashtra government identified the Pawna River valley in Maval taluka as the site for a new dam. The growing industrial area of Pimpri-Chinchwad needed a reliable water supply, and the valley’s geography, surrounded by hills, made it an ideal location for a reservoir.

Construction began in 1963. The project was interrupted in 1965 when the Indo-Pak War broke out, halting work for roughly a year. After the war, construction resumed and continued for another six years. Despite a second Indo-Pak conflict in 1971, the dam was completed in 1972.

The dam is an earthfill gravity structure, 1,329 metres long and 42.37 metres high. Its primary purposes are drinking water supply to Pimpri-Chinchwad, hydroelectric power generation (approximately 1,250 MW capacity), and irrigation for agricultural land in the region.

When the dam was built, approximately 2,500 acres of farmland was acquired. Around 20 to 25 villages were partially or fully submerged. About 1,200 families were displaced. Under a 1973 government resolution, 340 families received 4 acres of land each as compensation. The remaining families have been seeking proper rehabilitation for over fifty years, with protests, court rulings, and marches continuing to this day.

One remarkable piece of this history is the Wagheshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva temple that sits on the lake bed. It remains underwater for about eight months of the year. Between March and July, when water levels drop, the temple resurfaces and becomes visible. It is a powerful reminder of what existed here before the lake.

For decades after the dam, Pawna Lake served quietly as a reservoir. Tourism only began to pick up around 2015, when local farming families started converting their land into campsites. Today, the camping industry has transformed the local economy and given the region a new identity.

5. Best Time to Visit Pawna Lake

Winter (October to February): The Best Season

Why go: Cool nights perfect for bonfires. Clear skies ideal for stargazing. The lake is full after the monsoon. Comfortable temperatures during the day. Best overall camping weather.

What to watch out for: Weekends can get crowded, especially around New Year, Christmas, and long weekends. Book in advance. Carry warm clothes because nights can drop to 10 to 13 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon (June to September): The Most Beautiful (But Risky)

Why go: The landscape turns lush green. Small waterfalls appear on the hillsides. The lake fills up to its highest levels. Misty mornings are incredibly photogenic. Fewer crowds compared to winter.

What to watch out for: Roads can get slippery and muddy. Water levels rise significantly, so you must stay away from the lake edge. Some activities may be limited. Leeches can appear on muddy trails. We pitch tents under covered sheds during monsoon for protection.

Summer (March to May): Hot Days, Pleasant Evenings

Why go: Water levels are lower, so you can see more of the shoreline and the Wagheshwar Temple emerges in these months. Evenings are cooler with pleasant breezes. Fewer crowds and sometimes better rates.

What to watch out for: Daytime temperatures can reach 35 to 40 degrees Celsius. The heat can be uncomfortable during the afternoon. Plan your arrival for late afternoon.

Camping

This is the main reason people come to Pawna Lake. The camping experience here is different from anything you will find in the Western Ghats. You pitch a tent right beside the water, eat freshly cooked food under the open sky, sit around a bonfire, listen to music, and sleep with the sound of the lake in the background. It is a full overnight experience that starts at 4 PM and wraps up by 11 AM the next day. Bonfire and Campfire

After dinner, the campfire is where the real magic happens. Guests sit around the fire, share stories, play guitar, sing songs, or simply watch the flames. On clear winter nights, the combination of a crackling fire and a sky full of stars is hard to beat. Most campsites start the bonfire around 10:30 PM after the music winds down.

Barbecue

Barbecue at Pawna Lake is a highlight of every camping trip. At our campsites, we serve limited BBQ starters around 7:30 to 8:30 PM. The vegetarian option includes marinated paneer with assorted veggies, while the non-vegetarian option is marinated chicken with mixed veggies. Boating and Kayaking

Kayaking is also available at certain campsites (charges may apply, typically Rs 100 to 300 per person). Swimming (Important Safety Note)

Swimming in Pawna Lake is strictly prohibited. The lake is an artificial reservoir with an uneven bed, sudden depth changes, submerged rocks, and no lifeguards. Even experienced swimmers have gotten into serious trouble here. You can wade up to knee level near the shore, and that is the limit. Please do not ignore this. We have seen the consequences.

Photography

Pawna Lake is a photographer’s paradise. The golden hour light during sunrise and sunset, the mirror-like reflections on still mornings, the fort silhouettes against cloudy skies, and the dramatic monsoon mist provide endless shooting opportunities. Drone photography is popular here too, though make sure you follow local regulations. The lake looks stunning from above, especially when the water level is high and the surrounding hills are green.

Bird Watching

The Pawna Lake ecosystem supports over 400 species of birds. The lake and surrounding wetlands attract various migratory birds during winter months (November to February). If you are into birding, carry binoculars and wake up early. The best sightings happen at dawn along the quieter stretches of the shoreline.

Stargazing

Pawna Lake is far enough from city lights that on clear, moonless nights the sky is genuinely impressive. The Milky Way is visible in the winter months. If you have even a basic telescope or just good binoculars, bring them along. Lying outside your tent and watching the sky is one of those simple pleasures that makes camping feel special.

Fort Trekking

This is covered in detail in the “Nearby Attractions” section below, but briefly: Tikona Fort (4.3 km), Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort, and Visapur Fort are all accessible from Pawna Lake. Most guests combine a camping night with an early morning trek. The sunrise views from these fort summits are worth the effort.

Cycling and Nature Walks

The roads around Pawna Lake pass through quiet villages, farmland, and forest patches. Early morning cycling or walking along these routes is a refreshing way to start your day. The terrain is mostly flat near the lake with gentle hills on the approach roads.

Campfire Games

At our campsites, we provide cricket, volleyball, badminton, archery, dart games, carrom, chess, and ludo. On weekends, the campsite turns into a mini sports arena in the evening. These activities are included in the camping package at no extra cost.

Fishing

10. Nearby Attractions

Tikona Fort (4.3 km from Pawna Lake)

Tikona, meaning “triangle,” is the pyramidal fort that dominates the Pawna Lake skyline. The fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1657 and served as a watchtower for the entire Pawana Mawal region. The trek from Tikona Peth takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and offers panoramic views of Pawna Lake and surrounding forts. Difficulty level: easy to moderate. Best combined with a camping night, with the trek done early morning.

Tung Fort / Kathingad (~8 km)

Tung Fort sits at 3,527 feet and is known locally as “Kathingad” or “difficult fort” because of its steep final ascent. Built by the Adil Shahi dynasty and later captured by Shivaji Maharaj. Since the dam was built, the fort is surrounded by water on three sides, and you can reach the base village of Tungi by boat across the lake. The view from the top is breathtaking.

Lohagad Fort (~20 km)

One of the most visited forts in Maharashtra. “Lohagad” means “Iron Fort,” and it is famous for its Vinchu Kata (scorpion tail-shaped bastion). A relatively easy trek with proper steps most of the way. Great views of the Pawna backwaters from the summit. Connected to Visapur Fort by a ridge.

Visapur Fort (~22 km)

Larger and taller than Lohagad at 3,556 feet. A more challenging trek with rock patches and scrambles. Best for experienced trekkers looking for a less crowded alternative to Lohagad.

Karla Caves (~25 km)

Ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BCE. The main chaitya (prayer hall) at Karla is one of the largest in India. A fascinating historical site and a great educational visit for families.

Bhaja Caves (~27 km)

Another set of Buddhist caves, smaller than Karla but less crowded. Dating back to the 2nd century BCE, these caves have beautiful carvings and a waterfall nearby during monsoon.

Lonavala (~20 km)

The popular hill station needs no introduction. Tiger Point, Bushi Dam, Rajmachi Point, and the famous chikki shops are all accessible from Pawna Lake. Many guests explore Lonavala on their way back from camping.

Pawna Backwaters

The quieter stretches of the Pawna Dam backwaters are perfect for peaceful walks, fishing, and photography. The water here is particularly calm in the early morning, creating mirror-like reflections of the surrounding hills.

11. How to Reach Pawna Lake

By Car

From Mumbai: Take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Exit at Lonavala. From Lonavala, drive approximately 20 km towards Pawna Lake via Dudhiware Khind or via Kamshet. Total drive time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic. Keep your speed under 40 kmph once you enter the village roads near the campsites.

From Pune: Two routes are available. The Kamshet route (55 to 65 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours) goes via the Expressway to Kamshet and then local roads to the lake. The Paud Road route (45 km, about 1.5 hours) goes through Paud, Kolvan, Jovan, and Thakursai. The Paud Road route is more scenic but slightly narrower.

By Bike

Pawna Lake is a popular biking destination. The roads from both Mumbai and Pune are well-maintained until you reach the village stretches. During monsoon, be careful of slippery patches and reduced visibility. Helmets are mandatory. Parking is available at most campsites.

By Train

The nearest railway stations are Kamshet (from Pune side) and Lonavala (from Mumbai side). Both are on the Mumbai-Pune local and express train routes. From Kamshet or Lonavala, you will need to hire a private jeep or cab to reach the campsites. A one-way jeep from Lonavala costs around Rs 1,200 per vehicle. Sharing cabs from Kamshet are sometimes available and more cost-effective. We can share local driver contact numbers after you book.

By Bus

State transport buses run between Pune and Lonavala, and between Pune and Kamshet. From there, you will need private transport to the campsite as there is no direct bus service to the lake. Auto rickshaws are available within Lonavala for local travel.

Nearest Airport

Pune International Airport (64 km) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (104 km).

Road Conditions

The main highways are in excellent condition. The last 15 to 20 km from Lonavala or Kamshet to the campsites are on village roads that can be narrow and uneven. During monsoon, some stretches may have waterlogging. A car with decent ground clearance is recommended during the rainy season.

Parking

Most campsites offer free parking within the campsite premises. Your vehicle stays inside the property.

12. Best Sunrise Points at Pawna Lake

The sunrise at Pawna Lake is worth setting an alarm for, even if you stayed up late around the bonfire.

The best sunrise views come from the eastern bank of the lake, where most campsites are located. You do not need to go anywhere special. Just step out of your tent, walk to the lakeside, and watch the sun come up over the hills. The golden light reflecting off the calm water is something you will remember.

For an elevated sunrise experience, the summit of Tikona Fort offers a 360-degree view that includes the lake, surrounding hills, and mist-filled valleys. Start the trek at 5 AM to reach the top before sunrise.

13. Best Sunset Points at Pawna Lake

Sunsets at Pawna Lake are spectacular. The sun goes down behind Tikona Fort, and the sky turns into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple. The best part is that you do not need to hike or drive anywhere. The sunset is visible right from the campsite.

The best spots for sunset viewing are the lakeside seating areas at campsites on the Thakursai and Chavsar side of the lake. Some campsites have elevated gazebos or swing seats positioned specifically for sunset views.

If you are on a boat during sunset, the experience is even better. The colours reflecting on the water all around you make it feel like you are inside a painting.

14. Photography Spots at Pawna Lake

Drone photography: The aerial view of Pawna Lake with its irregular shoreline, green hills, and scattered campsites is stunning. Early morning is the best time for drone shots when the air is still and the light is soft.

Instagram spots: Triangle tents against the sunset backdrop, lakeside swings, bonfire setups with fairy lights, and the lake reflection shots are the most popular Instagram content from Pawna Lake.

Couple shoots: The lakeside, especially during golden hour, provides a natural romantic backdrop. Many couples do pre-wedding shoots at Pawna Lake because of the varied backdrops available within a small area, including water, mountains, greenery, and rustic camp setups.

Landscape photography: The wide panoramas from the hillside approaching the lake, the fort silhouettes at dusk, and the misty monsoon mornings offer strong landscape compositions.

Night and astrophotography: On moonless winter nights, the Milky Way is clearly visible. Bring a tripod and a camera with manual settings. The dark sky combined with the lake surface reflecting starlight creates unique long-exposure opportunities.

15. Food Near Pawna Lake

Most people eat at their campsite, and honestly, that is the best option. The food at organised campsites is cooked fresh on-site using locally sourced ingredients. At pawnalakecamps.in, our typical meal schedule includes:

Outside the campsites, Pawnanagar has a few small eateries and tea stalls. There is no large restaurant scene here. The local market is about 5 km from most campsites, and the nearest beer shop is also around 5 km away. The HP petrol pump at Kadhade is approximately 8.5 km away.

If you are driving from Lonavala, there are plenty of restaurants and bakeries in Lonavala town where you can stop for a meal before or after your camping trip.

16. Hotels and Stays Near Pawna Lake

Accommodation options near Pawna Lake range from basic tents to luxury resorts:

Tent camping (Rs 999 to Rs 1,499 per person): The most popular and authentic Pawna Lake experience. Common washrooms, outdoor setting, bonfire, food included.

Triangle tents / Glamping (Rs 1,499 to Rs 2,499 per person): Upgraded tents with fans, lights, and more space. Still common washrooms but a more comfortable experience.

Cottages (Rs 1,899 to Rs 4,999 per person): Private rooms with attached washrooms, proper beds, and sometimes AC and geysers. Good for families and older guests.

Our honest recommendation? If it is your first time at Pawna Lake, try camping. Hotels and resorts are available everywhere. But sleeping in a tent beside the water, eating under the stars, and waking up to the lake, that is the experience that makes Pawna Lake special.

Pawna Lake has become one of the most popular romantic getaways near Mumbai and Pune, and for good reason.

Privacy: At our campsites, couple tents are placed slightly apart from the main group area. You get your own space without being isolated. The lakeside setting, the quiet evening, and the bonfire make for a naturally romantic atmosphere without any gimmicks.

Safety: The locals around Pawna Lake are friendly and respectful. This is a well-known tourist area, and the villagers are used to seeing couples camping here every weekend. We have never had any guest report issues related to being a couple at our campsite. Just carry a valid photo ID (Aadhaar card, driving licence, or passport).

19. Pawna Lake for Corporate Groups

20. Safety Tips

• Do not swim in the lake. Pawna Lake is deep with uneven underwater surfaces and no lifeguards. Swimming is strictly prohibited. Wade up to knee level only.
• Arrive before sunset. The village roads leading to campsites can be difficult to navigate in the dark, especially for first-time visitors.
• Wear comfortable shoes. Not flip-flops. The terrain around the lake is uneven, and you will be walking on grass, mud, and gravel.
• Carry a torch. Even well-lit campsites have dark patches. A flashlight is essential for nighttime walks to the washroom.
• Keep children supervised near water. The lake edge can be slippery, and water levels may be deceptively deep even close to shore.
• Drink responsibly. Alcohol is permitted at most campsites, but excessive drinking combined with an outdoor environment can lead to accidents. Our campsites enforce a music cutoff at 11 PM.
• Carry mosquito repellent. Odomos or a similar product. Mosquitoes are common in the evenings, especially near the water.
• Check weather before travelling during monsoon. Heavy rains can cause waterlogging on access roads and sudden water level changes in the lake.
• Keep valuables secure. Do not carry expensive jewellery or large amounts of cash. Use digital payments where possible.
• Emergency contacts: Save your campsite organiser’s number, and note that the nearest hospital is in Lonavala (approximately 20 km) or Kamshet.

Note: Campsites provide tents, mattresses, bedsheets, blankets, and pillows. You do not need to carry sleeping gear. Toiletries are NOT provided, so bring your own.
